COLUMBIA, S.C. --
Federal nuclear inspectors say a proposal to build two nuclear reactors at a site near Columbia passed a safety inspection.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Thursday that the conclusion of the inspections clears the way for a hearing later this year by the commission to decide whether to issue licenses to build the reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville.
South Carolina Electric & Gas and state-owned utility Santee Cooper want to build two 1,100-megawatt reactors at the plant. Officials expect the first reactor to generate power by 2016, and the second in 2019.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has already decided the proposed plants wouldn't have any serious environmental impacts.
When will the words "Any Serious environmental impact" mean anything?
